Windmill Hill
Hilltop arête

A chunk of quarried tuff perched on the hill above Woodhouse Eaves. Home to the best arête problem in the county and some harder variations on that theme. The Arête f7A is a classic and a must for those operating at the grade. Combines well with a visit to Forest Rock and Beacon Hill.

Parking: Park courteously on Bird Hill Road, Woodhouse Eaves LE12 8RR.
Approach: Take the footpath that runs between the houses up to the top of the hill. The crag is directly below the old windmill.

The famous post mill on Windmill Hill was destroyed by fire on 15 April 1945, but the stone roundhouse can still be seen. It was originally built in Derbyshire, but moved here in the late 18th century; it was certainly here by 1806. In use till 1895, it was damaged in the March gales of that year and became a ruin, but was restored in 1929 and again in 1944. The last miller was John Hives.
