On the side of the road, and indeed the country hereabout is a display of rude nature, grey ponderous rocks jut forth from the hills, and here and there patches of fern and wild thorns are scattered about.
Markfield is called in old documents "Merc-en-Feld" [Mark-In-Field], and there seems to be some explanation of this provided in the existence formerly of "The Altar Stone" in a field to the Leicester side of the village, stated to have been "covered with outlandish letters." This is thought to have been Roman; but whatever it was, it went towards road-repairs long ago."
Many other possibilities abound in this quarry for a bold gardener with aqua-lungs.
