The main crag is sandstone of the Trachose Grit quartzite: patches of iron-stained rounded sand grains can still be made out with the unaided eye.
This is shown in the little quarry opposite the Ruins and across the brook, which, from a range of stable-buildings pulled down some twenty years ago, is usually called the Stable Quarry. It is a very puzzling place.
